Painful Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Acupuncture Therapy

The carpal tunnel is the part of the wrist where the tunnel or tube in the wrist passes the carpal bones. The pain originates in the region where the wrist and the hand meet. A decrease of the size of the carpal tunnel will put pressure on the median nerve causing the classical pain and numbness of carpal tunnel syndrome.

You can see the tendons pop-up if you turn your palm and move your palm toward your face. Lying underneath these tendons is the median nerve; when this nerve is pinched, pain is felt. Although it is widely known as a work-related injury caused by repetitive wrist and finger actions, about 50% of people affected by carpal tunnel syndrome do not know what particular activity caused it.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) symptoms usually occur after you embark on a new hobby or job that requires the continuous use of your fingers and wrist. Among sexes, the women are the ones most prone to develop CTS particularly if they’re around 40 to 70 years of age or pregnant. CTS can cause pain in the palm, wrist and forearm and can affect a single arm or both arms. There are sufferers who may feel pain when they make repetitive movements while some may feel constant tingling or numbing in half of their ring finger, or in their middle finger and thumb. Nighttime is when the pain gets worse. It can become very severe that the sufferer is forced to wake up in order to shake his/ her hands to alleviate the numbness. You may have problems with crocheting or writing or other fine motor skills when you have CTS. This condition may cause your affected to drop things.

Acupuncture and Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM)

Acupuncturists and other TCM practitioners may diagnose CTS as an accumulation of wind (marked by the shooting and tingling nerve pain), damp (hand and forearm may feel achy and heavy), and cold (when it gets cold, the pain becomes severe). These three factors affect the flow of qi and blood in one’s arms.

Acupuncture treatments use needles to stimulate acupuncture points near the wrist. A mild sensation of electricity may be felt during the treatment which is good since it helps relax the tendons and relieve the numbness and pain. Other forms of acupuncture may include laser acupuncture, magnet therapy, moxibustion, electromagnetic acupuncture and electro-acupuncture to help treat carpal tunnel syndrome in Orlando.

Besides getting treatment from your acupuncturist, you need to stay away from activities that require the use of the wrists. These include assembly line work, working at a computer and writing using a pen for a long time.
