In order to prevent skin inflammation and skin itching, you can consider these remedies and lifestyle applications to make your day and night as itch-free as possible.
- Do not use or put substances or things in your body that can irritate your skin. These can include cosmetics, cleaning products, perfume, jewelry or nickel.
- When washing your linen, pillow sheets, bed sheets, towels and clothes use mild laundry detergents that carry no heavy chemicals or perfumes that can irritate your skin. Thoroughly rinse, your laundry by using the washing machine’s extra-rinse cycle, if it has one.
- Shower or bathe in soaps that are free of heavy chemicals, perfumes or dyes. Wash thoroughly the soap off your body. When you have dried, you can gently rub your skin with a lotion or a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and to protect it from harsh environmental factors.
- If possible wear at all times cotton clothing that has smooth texture to prevent your skin from becoming irritated.
- If you are bathing on a hot tub, use cool or mild water so as not to agitate the skin. Before bathing you can put in colloidal oatmeal, uncooked oatmeal or baking soda in the tub filled with mild or cool water to help neutralize your itching. You can use Aveeno or oatmeal that is finely grounded, not course.
- In lieu of scratching you can soothe your itchy skin by applying wet, cool compresses on the itchy areas.
- To prevent scratching you can wear gloves the whole day or night particularly while you’re sleeping. You can also cover the itchy areas with dressings or bandages to prevent you from scratching them. Always keep your hands, fingers and fingernails clean and trim your nails regularly.
- If your itch is severe, you can apply an over-the-counter ointment or cream containing 1% hydrocortisone to relieve the itch. You can also try using diphenhydramine for severe itches.
- You can use creams like CeraVe, Eucerin, Cetaphil or Vanicream that are proven very effective moisturizing creams to keep your skin from itching or to relieve severe itching. You can apply these creams on the affected areas one or two times a day until the itching goes away.
