Irritable Bowel Syndrome Prevention

Potentially everyone can experience irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at some point in their life. Too much stress can upset the neuromuscular function of the intestines making the intestinal walls super sensitive to certain foods and drinks. If you have IBS you will experience stomach pain and may experience diarrhea or constipation. There are ways to help you prevent or lessen your IBS symptoms. These can include:

  • Yoga – This can be part of deep breathing techniques that can help relax the muscles of your stomach and can result in the normal functioning of your bowel movement.
  • Meditation
  • Relaxation exercises – These can include progressive relaxation exercises. These exercises involve alternately tightening and relaxing the muscles in your feet, your calves and other muscle groups in your body.
  • Hypnosis – You can do self-hypnosis or be hypnotized by a professional hypnotist to reduce or remove the bloating and pain in your stomach.
  • Hobby or recreation – Just merely immersing yourself in a hot or warm bath, enjoying PC or video games, reading or listening to an audiobook or your favorite music for at least 20 minutes each day can help you feel completely relaxed and give a normal functioning bowel movement each day as well.
  • Counseling – You can feel at ease when you seek help from a psychiatrist or a psychologist and learn some methods to lessen stress. You can change the way you react to situations in a way that will not trigger or aggravate IBS symptoms.
  • Biofeedback – This is a method that uses a machine to lower your heart rate and muscle tightness. Later on, an expert will teach you how to relax by yourself with the aim of you going into a complete state of relaxation to help you cope better with stress.
  • Acupuncture – Getting acupuncture on a regular basis is one of the best ways to reduce stress and stomach pain. Non-hollow and ultra thin needles are often used and are inserted into certain points in the body to stimulate the release of endorphins and other “feel-good” chemicals in the body enabling the whole body to feel relaxed and calm. This helps prevent the aggravation of your IBS symptoms and better the function of your digestive system.
