Headaches – Coping and Support

Headaches are no joke especially if they’re migraines or chronic headaches. Your life can be severely affected by headaches that can render you unable to perform normal everyday tasks and force you to sit or stay in bed for hours or even a whole day. To cope well with headaches, find ways to lessen your stress, use your medications as prescribed by your doctor and avail of alternative treatments that are safe and effective. You can manage your headaches better each day by:

  • Knowing the triggers for your headache – To know and avoid its triggers, keep a headache diary.
  • Stop smoking and alcohol drinking – Drinking alcohol and smoking usually ends up with you getting a headache. Abstain from alcohol and seek help from you doctor on the effective ways to quit smoking and alcohol drinking.
  • Follow an everyday healthy lifestyle routine – Procure for yourself an adequate sleep every night and eat snacks and meals regularly and ones that are without additives or preservatives.
  • Exercise – Doing some walking, swimming or stretching exercises for at least 20 minutes a day will prevent you from getting a headache and make your body feel all good and relaxed.
  • Lessen stress – Have enough time to give yourself some enjoyment like resting, sleeping, playing a game or watching a nice movie. Get up and do some stretching after sitting for an hour or more. Learn to relax your shoulders, neck and even your jaw. For the lessening of emotional stress, do some deep breathing exercises or learn yoga or meditation and other relaxation techniques.
  • If you have a treatment plan from your doctor, always follow it and do not take any medications not prescribed by your doctor

Women with severe headaches or migraines from their menstrual cycle can opt for preventative therapy or hormonal therapy for the management of their severe head pains.
