Dandruff Complications

It is highly unlikely that complications can arise from dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. However, in case they do arise, they may be from some adverse reaction to any treatments you may be using or from infection.

Reaction to a strong medical shampoo – The potency of the shampoo or the prescription medicine you are using to treat your dandruff can even more affect your body than the dandruff itself.  A person having sensitive skin especially in the face and scalp can suffer from skin inflammation or irritation by the medicated shampoo. If this happens, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist who can recommend or prescribe a more appropriate treatment option.  You may need to consult with your doctor if your scalp becomes reddish and swollen or if your dandruff does not get resolved after having utilized over-the-counter medicated shampoos.

Infection – Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff can lead to infection after a pathogen enters a break in your scalp or skin.  If your scalp becomes severely itchy from the dandruff, the frequent and continuous scratching may break your skin leaving an opening in it wherein a bacteria can enter in and cause an infection. Although this case is quite rare, it does occur and you may eventually need to visit your doctor for corresponding treatment.

You may need to talk to your doctor if you are suffering seborrheic dermatitis that seems to be impervious to treatment or if you manifest the following symptoms:

  • Patches of seborrheic dermatitis that become very painful and reddish
  • Crusts developing on the patches of seborrheic dermatitis area
  • Patches of seborrheic dermatitis that are filled with pus or fluid

Although seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff are not signs that a person has poor hygiene, they may potentially be causes of psychological stress that can undermine the self-esteem of a person.
