Causes of Gastritis

Helicobacter pylori

For most people who have experienced gastritis the most common culprit for this condition is a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori for short.  This bacterium can infect an individual through person to person contact or through eating or drinking contaminated food or drinking water. The H. pylori bacterium is also one major cause of stomach ulcers.

Medications

Taking naproxen (Aleve), ibuprofen (Advil) or aspirin (Motrin) on a daily basis can induce gastritis. These medications are effective in relieving pain; unfortunately, they have negative side effects one of which is eroding the lining of the stomach.  Taking one or two tablets of these drugs occasionally will not risk the likelihood of a person developing gastritis but taking them daily can easily cause gastritis and/or stomach ulcers.

Alcohol, Caffeine and Street Drugs

These substances are generally bad for you and can be particularly bad for your stomach lining. Cocaine use, drinking a lot of alcohol and too much caffeine can lead to gastritis. Cocaine will not only cause you gastritis and other major physical conditions it can do severe damage to your brain as well.

Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy

These very harmful and invasive “therapies” are causal factors in gastritis.  Cancer victims undergoing them face a high risk for gastritis because radiation and the toxic chemicals used in chemotherapy inflame and irritate the stomach lining. Heavy radiation therapy and chemotherapy often cause permanent damage to the mucosa or stomach lining making the person susceptible to gastritis.
