Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine May Help You Successfully Stop Your Smoking Habit

Ralph Waldo Emerson said that “The believing we do something when we do nothing is the first illusion of tobacco.” These uncanny words of wisdom are obviously true although its veracity does not affect in any way the propensity of smokers to keep on smoking, even if they want to stop.

People want to quit smoking for different reasons. Some may decide quit due to the financial, destructive, and wasteful consequences the habit costs; the birth of a child; or the onset of a disease. Whatever the reason is, it is a good one for the simple reason it will help you stop putting toxins in your body and in the bodies of other people. Your reason to quit smoking hopefully is only the start of what should really be a litany of reasons to cease. This conscientious effort will more than likely be supported by your family and friends because it’s the right thing to do.

Sadly, for a lot of smokers who want to quit, these reasons are not strong enough to stop smoking for good since most of them fail during the initial attempts; they become frustrated of their weakness and in the end just surrender to their urges. If you are one of these people, you probably just need a helping hand to succeed. In this regard, acupuncture might be of help. This unique but powerful treatment can help manage the withdrawal symptoms that come with smoking cessation such as sleeping difficulties, low energy, irritability and flu-like symptoms such as coughing and a dry throat. Equally important is that acupuncture can also help lower your smoking cravings.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves the use of sterile filiform needles inserted into specific points in the body known as acupoints to stimulate the energy channels called meridians just underneath these points to induce a healing process in your body. Stimulating the right combinations of meridians can bring about a desired outcome, e.g. proper management of nicotine withdrawal or a reduction of cravings.

What acupoints are selected to help suppress the smoking cravings?

The energy pattern of each person is unique, which means that the combination of points for each patient is unique as well. For smoking addiction, certain points are selected by your acupuncturist for treatment that serves as adjuncts to your own personal point prescription. Acupoints selected include one located on the wrist’s radial side and points located on the ear that are stimulated with seeds. Vaccaria plant seeds are used and taped on the ear. They remain taped for a few days to sustain stimulation until the next session of acupuncture.

In terms of diagnosis, your acupuncturist will determine if the pattern of disharmony manifested by your body is one of excess or deficiency. From there, a correct combination of acupoints is chosen to help manage your cravings and treat your smoking addiction.
